The action of water on the limestone rock over millennia has created this narrowing of the Tíscar River that comes to look like a cave due to the narrowness of its route. This place was an object of desire during the reconquest by both Muslims and Christians, since from its vantage point the passage through these mountains was dominated. From that time we get wonderful legends about conquests and apparitions that add charm to this beautiful place.

Sanctuary of Tíscar

To access our path we will take a path that leaves to the right of the A6206 towards Pozo Alcón, after leaving the tunnel under the sanctuary of Tíscar.

It was the first Christians after the reconquest, who built this Marian temple. Centuries passed and it became the place of pilgrimage. Next to its chapel, a farmhouse was built to accommodate the weary pilgrims. Later, after successive restoration and expansion works, it appears as we see it today.

If we follow its winding route for about five hundred meters we reach the beginning of the path (see 1 on the map), there we can find a parking lot where we can leave the car.

Descent from the pool

The route offered is short but intense and, even if it is short, we must be careful not to slip, due to the numerous stairs and the humidity of the place.

As soon as we start, we find some stairs that we will go down to a landing. For a while, we must hold on to pass about 10 meters of a tunnel through which a ditch passes. Further on, we will see some stairs on the left, from here the cave is already well visible. We can venture down these stairs and go back to the viewpoint, or continue down to the final platform.

The legend of the virgin

According to legend, the Moors who inhabited the castle of Tiscar believed that the insistence of the Christians to conquer their fortress was due to the fact that they wanted to recover an image of the virgin that they possessed, so they threw it from the tower, into the enclosure of the river. But, magically, the image reappeared before them again and again.

Their chief, Mohammed Andon, was furious, smashing it to pieces with his cutlass. When the Christians conquered the castle, they found out what had happened and found the pieces and took them to Toledo to repair them. But, once again, the virgin miraculously reappeared in Tiscar.

The Cave of the Virgin

In front of us is the image of the Virgin 3 among the mosses and ferns, surrounded by candles and other relics that, according to tradition, can only be placed by the young men of Belerda.

The cave features a combination of light and dark, water and whimsical stone shapes (stalactites, stalagmites and columns). The vegetation blends with these elements, creating unique environments. It is known as the Cave of the Virgin of Tiscar because, according to tradition, in 1319 the virgin appeared there to the kinglet of Tiscar, Mahomed Adon.

The castle, of small dimensions, is of Muslim origin, from the fourteenth century. This one perched on a fine ridge of the Peña Negra. Its accessibility is complicated and with some danger. This difficulty was even proven when it was restored a few years ago. According to legend, when the castle was reconquered, it was awarded to the squire of the feat, Pere Hidalgo, that a golden star would appear on his coat of arms on a red background.

In this abrupt and secluded place in the south of the Sierra de Cazorla, we can discover this small corner where cultural and natural wealth come together.
