The Astronomical Corridor of Jaén, the first and only one in the world, is a continuous territory with night skies of exceptional quality and conservation that provides the ideal conditions for astrotourism and astronomical observation, which extends uninterruptedly throughout four regions of the province of Jaén: from north to south, Sierra de Segura, Sierra de Cazorla, Sierra Mágina and Sierra Sur de Jaén.
These regions, all of them certified as Starlight Reserve by the foundation of the same name, not only have a clean and dark night sky, but also treasure a rich cultural and natural heritage that allows them to offer the astrotourist unique experiences under the starry mantle.
Thus, the Astronomical Corridor of Jaén is made up of a network of enclaves of astrotourist interest throughout these regions, ranging from secluded locations to enjoy the observation of the darkest skies, to heritage elements that offer an iconic postcard of the territory under the firmament or pair in a special way with the starry sky.
This document constitutes, therefore, an inventory of all these points that make up the Astronomical Corridor of Jaén, in which the characteristics of the enclave are detailed and useful information is provided both for the visitor and for local tourism companies that want to offer astrotourism services and products in the Astronomical Corridor.
The different elements described below can be classified into different types:
- Natural location: those points away from urban areas where conditions of darkness and visibility are ideal for astronomical observation.
- Historical heritage: elements such as castles, monuments, ruins, hermitages and other iconic elements of the territory. These often do not have the highest quality night sky, but on the contrary they allow the organization of experiences that combine the starry sky with other attractions and serve as a resource for astrophotography.
- Tourism infrastructure: places such as visitor centers or museums.
- Festivity: popular events or festivals that are (or may be) related to sky observation, astronomy or nocturnal ecosystems.
The typology in turn determines the type of astrotourism potential of each enclave or resource:
- Astronomical observation: it is attributed to natural locations and, sometimes, to urban heritage sites compatible with the observation of celestial objects such as planets or the moon. While the use of telescopes is advisable, experiences can also be provided by observing with the naked eye, with binoculars and/or with the help of a laser pointer to guide.
- Astrophotography: it is attributed to places that allow a nocturnal identity image of the place to be captured through compositions that include recognizable emblematic elements (sites, castles, bridges, hermitages…) under the starry mantle.
- Combined experience: it is related to enclaves or resources that combine the night sky and/or astronomy with other attractions such as hiking, gastronomy, music, theater or history, among others. These experiences are usually unique and very attractive for the casual astrotourist, who is not a regular fan of astrotourism.
- Archaeoastronomy: type of experience that combines astronomy with history, and particularly with the worldview of ancient civilizations and the influence of the night sky on their culture.
In addition to this classification, the following information is provided for each enclave or resource:
- Geographical coordinates.
- Link to Google Maps location.
- Link to weather forecast (cloud cover).
- Link to Seeing prediction (atmospheric stability).
- Quality of the night sky according to Bortle’s qualitative scale.
- Night sky quality measured according to quantitative values of sky background brightness (SQM).
- Opening of the horizon for sky observation (low, medium, high).
- Parking or parking space.
- Telescope assembly: associated with the possibility of accessing the same observation point with a vehicle to unload the equipment.
- Access hours (in turn related to the ownership and use of the space).
- Recommended for groups: This information is especially relevant for astrotourism professionals who organize guided observations for groups, as they require large and safe spaces for their activity.
